Health Information Technology and Telehealth

The Lewin Group's activities in Health Information Technology (Health IT) and Telehealth promote the development and adoption of new technologies to improve health care quality, reduce error rates, promote real-time communication, improve efficiencies and workflow, and support the dissemination of high-quality and usable health information to consumers, providers, and policy-makers. We develop health information products and decision support tools that help clients maximize the impact of health information investments.

Sample Projects

  • Business Case for Integrating Child Health Information. With funding from US HHS and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and in collaboration with the Public Health Informatics Institute, Lewin created and is testing an Excel-based modeling tool to help states develop business plans for integrating child health information systems.
  • Evaluation of Tele-BSN Program. For the US Health Resources and Services Administration, Lewin is assisting with the evaluation of a demonstration program that promoted Web-based learning for nurses who live and work in rural areas.
  • Public Health Data Standards Consortium Web-based Resource Center. The National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention engaged Lewin to plan, develop, launch, conduct usability testing, and maintain a Web-based resource center on public health data standards
  • AUDIT (Automated User Defined Inspection Tool). Lewin led the development of a mobile and Web-based paperless platform that facilitates data collection for accreditation, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and performance review. User-centered design supports auto report generation, real-time field communications, handwriting, and attachment of digital photos and GIS/GPS data. (Click here for more information)
  • National Guidelines Clearinghouse. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality engaged Lewin to evaluate user awareness and usability for a Web-based repository of evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • Assessment of Approaches to Evaluating Telemedicine Projects. Lewin analyzed existing evaluation data and made recommendations about future evaluations that were included in the HHS 2001 Report to Congress on Telemedicine.
  • Electronic Prescribing Initiatives. For a large health plan and a trade association, Lewin performed a cost-benefit analysis of a range of e-prescribing technologies.
  • Credentialing Strategy. Lewin is currently working with a nonprofit organization to assist them in achieving broader use of their proprietary credentialing database. The project involves gaining a deep understanding of the current uses of the database, as well as conducting interviews and other analyses to determine the potential uses of the data and potential savings resulting from broader use. The results of the project will be actionable information that the organization can use to encourage increased update and utilization of the database, as well as inform pricing decisions on potential new product(s).
