Workforce Management
An adequate supply of health workers is integral to achieving the nation's goal of ensuing access to quality and affordable health care. Our Health Workforce Group, a multidisciplinary team, conducts public policy research and economic analysis and provides strategic planning to help health care stakeholders understand the implications of demographic trends, changes in the health care operating environment, and policies and programs on efforts to train, recruit and retain health workers. We provide these services to policymakers, payers and providers, consumer groups, and philanthropic foundations. We employ a quantitative approach to help decision-makers in the public and private sectors deal effectively with health worker supply and demand and related issues, such as workforce management and program design.
Health Worker Supply and Demand
Our studies reveal the economic implications of supply imbalances and inform decisions on the number of health workers to train. We help develop models that project supply and demand for physicians and nurses at the national, state, and local levels; carry out national workforce studies of supply, demand, and practice patterns for medical specialists; and help the federal government reformulate its criteria for designating mental health HPSAs.
Health Workforce Management
We conduct analyses that encompass the entire lifecycle of workforce management, answering questions like: How many staff with what skills mix do we need to operate most profitably? How can we attract them? And how can we motivate them to work hard and in the best interests of our organization? Our efforts help clients recruit and retain workers, develop training curriculums for new employees, place health professionals in underserved areas, improve systems for assigning jobs, and measure the impact of performance-based pay on productivity.
Program Evaluation
To facilitate strategic planning, we design and perform rigorous program evaluation. Our systematic research, including tools development and data collection and analysis, helps clients determine and document the consequences of workforce policies and the value of grant-sponsored programs. We also convene conferences and other meetings to examine policies and programs affecting workforce recruiting and retention and similar concerns relevant to supply and demand.
