Choices for Independence: A National Leadership Summit

On December 5-6, 2006, the Administration on Aging (AoA) convened a "Choices for Independence: A National Leadership Summit" attended by nearly 1,300 members of the National Aging Services Network to engage in an important dialogue on DHHS’s Choices for Independence initiative. This initiative, the principles of which are included in the newly enacted Older Americans Act (OAA) Amendments of 2006, is a key component of ongoing federal efforts to modernize and rebalance the nation’s long-term care system. Choices will guide and strengthen the OAA, and its emphasis on consumer empowerment, choice, and control will translate into independence and dignity for older Americans and adults with disabilities.

As part of the opening plenary sessions, Lisa Alecxih, a Vice President from The Lewin Group, provided an overview of long term care trends, their implications for the future and the components of Choices for Independence. The webcast and powerpoint for the presentation are available under the topic National and State Trends In Long-Term Care on the "Choices for Independence" summit HealthCast webpage on the Kaiser Family Foundation website.
