Performance of America’s Largest Hospital Systems on Quality and Patient Satisfaction

The Lewin Group’s updated and expanded rankings of hospital systems on quality and patient satisfaction released online.

The Lewin Group collaborated with the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement to produce rankings of America’s 120 largest hospital systems. Using quality and patient satisfaction data from 2007, as reported by CMS on the Hospital Compare website, the analysis linked together hospitals from the same systems and assessed their performance on quality and patient satisfaction measures.

On a combined overall measure of quality and patient satisfaction, the three highest performing systems were Baptist Health System, based in Birmingham, AL; Alegent Health, based in Omaha, NE; and the Mayo Foundation, headquartered in Rochester, MN. Baptist Health topped the patient satisfaction rankings, while Alegent Health ranked second in the quality ranking and the Mayo Foundation ranked in the top 12 for both quality and patient satisfaction. Results show that high quality and satisfaction is available in large and small systems and in all geographic regions, but that performance varies greatly across America’s health systems. The highest combined quality score (97.86%), earned by Novant Health, based in Winston-Salem, NC, was 17% higher than the quality scores in the lowest performing systems. Three systems had over 80% of patients indicate that they would definitely recommend their hospital to others: MedCath, Charlotte, NC, Partners Healthcare, Boston, MA, and Baptist Health System, Birmingham, AL. In the lowest performing systems, only half of patients would recommend their hospital to others.

While these rankings cannot fully represent all dimensions of quality and patient satisfaction provided by hospitals, they do give hospital system administrators more information than is available from any other source about how their performance compares to other hospital systems. As attention to quality and patient satisfaction grows and the links between quality, satisfaction, and financial performance grow tighter, system leaders will benefit from information on their current level of performance and the levels of performance achieved in the top performing systems. The Lewin Group plans to update these rankings quarterly, with the hope that they will empower system leaders to more effectively lead efforts to enhance the quality of care for their patients.

The Lewin Group provides a range of services to hospitals and health care systems.
