Statutorily required demonstration project to determine the level of compliance with evidence-based guidelines and implications of decision-support systems on utilization of imaging
FALLS CHURCH, VA – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has awarded a 3.5-year contract to The Lewin Group, one of the nation’s leading health care and human services consulting organizations. The Lewin Group will support CMS on design, development and implementation of the imaging demonstration project and provide technical support to demonstration participants.
Appropriate use of medical imaging has important consequences for avoiding costly procedures that are not consistent with evidence-based guidelines, and providing patients with the correct imaging study for the right reason from the beginning of their diagnosis and treatment. It is also very important in preventing unnecessary radiation exposure for beneficiaries. This demonstration, mandated under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA), will address many of the challenges CMS is facing around the use of imaging services.
“The Lewin Group is excited to contribute to CMS’s mission to align treatment with evidence-based recommendations,” said Lewin Group Vice President Charlie Bruetman. “This project allows us to further our commitment to supporting CMS programs, and to help improve the lives of millions of patients nationwide.”
